The first excursion: The Milton House

Yeah, we have excursion in the IEI program, and in the first excursion we went to the Milton House. The Milton House was a important "outpost" for the underground railroad. For those who don`t know, the underground railroad was some kind of safe route for slaves. But was not literally a railroad or a highway, most of the times the underground railroad was made by safe houses. People give shelter, food, clothes and protection for the slaves until they can move again. The final destination was Canada, there the slaves will finally become free, without fear of be recaptured. The Milton House was one of these safe houses. It was build by Joseph Goodrich and his family. In the beginning they build a little cabin, but later they build the big house. The Milton House work as a inn and a general store, so the slaves need to be hidden on the basement. A tunnel connects the basement with the old cabin outside the Milton House, so the slaves can move safely.
It was a great experience visit The Milton House. It is a important part of the US history and culture.

  3. Good explanation of the Underground Railroad metaphor! Did anything similar exist in Brazil during the time of slavery?

    1. Similar to the underground railroad? I don't know. Maybe not like the underground railroad, but yes, there were people who did something similar.

  4. Yes, similar to the Underground Railroad. It may be an interesting topic to look into: the different ways people around the world helped slaves.
