For this week i have to talk about two subjects, the first one is about the research we made and the second one is about the sentence "is technology make us stupid?" Unfortunately (or not) I didn't realize that and I make only one post with this two subjects (The Devil and The Computer). I don't wanna delete that post because I love it. So I will make another one about the history of computers!
Welcome to the short history about the personal computers! The first modern computer are so big that they need a big room to fit. They were not a singular thing but a bunch of separated things connected. The great challenge was build a smaller computer. Wen they invented the integrated circuit (microchip) this was possible. But between the microchip and the first personal computer there's a gap of more than 10 years. Wen we look at the computers today we didn't realize who difficult was to make this far. So, more then 10 years later the Italian company Olivietti made the Programma 101 in 1964, the first computer.
The Programma 101 have a similar size that the typewriter, but the 101 made math. They are called printing programmable calculator, or desktop calculator. Maybe the name "desktop" come from here. The 101 was like a modern scientific calculator today (the simple one), doing maths, store operations in the memory, and other things. One important thing is that the 101 have the option to print. Four years later in 1968 Hewlett-Packard made the Hewlett-Packard 9100A, the immediate evolution of the 101. The 9100A was to a programmable calculator, but was better than the 101 because they have magnetic card. The 9100A was the first scientific calculator, by the modern definition. The sovietic computer MIR was the first one to have a monitor and a mouse. They are built in 1969.
In 1973 the new age of computer starts with the giant IBM launching the own first personal computer, the portable computer. The great brands, such as IBM and Xerox, was fighting for a small market because the computer are limited and with a expensive cost. Only technicians buy the "personal computers". But in 1976 two young men change the history. They made the first accessible personal computer, the Apple-I.
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak made more than a ordinary computer, they made a computer that everyone could have in home. And in 1977 they introduce the Apple-II or just the Apple, a modern computer similar to the ones we have in our houses today. The impact of theses two young mans are so big that the giant IBM feared then! Another computers were made trough 70's and 80's, but in this time they still being a work machine or a game machine. In the early 90's they became the idea of computer we have today, a indispensable machine. One of the reasons of the success of the computer in the 90's is that in the same age they begin to commercialize the internet. Today, everyone have a computer, a tablet or a smartphone. And everyone use the internet, 50 years after the first personal computer.
Very good Diogo! As I said in class, the name Desktop itself is the combination of monitor, mouse, keyboard and the computer itself. But that is my definition, you can find many others on the internet Xd.
ReplyDeleteSome time ago, a watch the movie “Jobs”. The movie tells the story about Steve Jobs, Woz and Apple as well. What they did was amazing, some kind of revolution. Jobs had an incredible business sense. He was sure that the success for a technology company is to focus on customers, not only in performance.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like an interesting film, Lucas!
DeleteThank you for the information, Diogo! How interesting! Isn't it amazing how much technology has evolved in such a short period of time? I'm glad you all were able to learn something from our library trip and research last week!
